How anime, music, and software engineering turned Tokyo into a long-term career goal.

I discovered Japan the way many people my age did—through anime.

But what made it stay with me was music.

Specifically, the songs of YUI Yoshioka.

There was something about her music that felt honest and unhurried. The songs didn't feel like they were trying to impress anyone. They simply existed, and years later that feeling still stays with me.

Sometimes a place enters your life long before you ever set foot there.

I'm Avinash, a 26-year-old backend developer in progress from Kotdwara, a small town in Uttarakhand, India.

Most mornings begin the same way: coffee, LeetCode, and a laptop screen glowing before the rest of the town wakes up.

Today, I'm working toward a backend software engineering career, spending my mornings solving problems, building projects, and learning the fundamentals that every strong engineer needs.

Somewhere between writing code and listening to music, Japan quietly became a long-term goal.

More Than Anime

When people hear that someone likes Japan, they often assume it's because of anime. Anime was the introduction, but what kept my interest alive was everything else.

The attention to detail, the respect for craftsmanship, the cleanliness, and the culture of taking even small tasks seriously all stood out to me. There seems to be an underlying belief that how you do ordinary things matters.

That idea resonates with me as a developer.

Software engineering is often about doing small things correctly over and over again. Good architecture isn't built in a day. Strong skills aren't developed in a week. Progress comes from consistency, patience, and attention to detail.

Excellence is rarely a single moment. More often, it is repetition done well.

Japan feels like a country that understands that principle.

Tokyo Is Not Just a Dream

Most dreams stay vague.

This one eventually became practical.

While exploring international opportunities, I came across companies like Mercari, LY Corporation, and Rakuten. The more I researched them, the more I realized that Tokyo is home to engineering organizations solving large-scale problems for millions of users.

That was the moment Japan stopped being just a cultural interest and became a professional aspiration.

I am not interested in moving somewhere simply because it looks exciting on social media. If I ever move countries, I want it to be because I can grow as an engineer and learn from people who care deeply about what they build.

The challenge, of course, is language. Most positions require strong Japanese proficiency, and I currently speak none. There are English-first companies and international teams in Tokyo, but they are much harder to find.

Still, I've learned something from software engineering:

Difficult does not mean impossible.

The Reality Behind the Dream

Japan has a reputation for long working hours and an intense corporate culture. Those concerns are real, and I don't think it's useful to pretend otherwise.

A country should not be romanticized simply because we admire parts of its culture. If I ever move to Japan, I want to do so with a realistic understanding of both the positives and the negatives.

Opportunities are valuable, but not at the cost of health, relationships, or personal happiness.

The goal is not merely to work in Japan.

The goal is to build a life there that feels meaningful.

I Am Not Ready Yet

This is the part that many people skip.

I am not ready today.

And that's okay.

Right now, my focus is simple: becoming a stronger backend engineer, improving my problem-solving skills, building projects, gaining professional experience, and continuing to learn every day.

Japanese language study can come later.

International job applications can come later.

Tokyo can come later.

The foundation comes first.

There is a quote from One Piece that I keep coming back to:

"No matter how hard or impossible it is, never lose sight of your goal."

Maybe it's a little cheesy.

But sometimes simple ideas stay with us because they're true.

Before Anything Else, I Want to Visit

Before the career plans, before the language exams, and before the job applications, there is something much simpler that I want.

I want to visit Japan.

I want to walk through a quiet temple, explore local markets, eat authentic sushi, and experience everyday life beyond the tourist attractions. I want to sit somewhere peaceful and listen to YUI's music in the country that inspired it.

That experience alone would be worth the journey.

The Horizon

The road from India to Tokyo is long.

I am an English-speaking developer from a small Indian town, still learning, still building, and still early in my career.

I know that.

But everything I have achieved so far started the same way: as a distant goal that seemed unrealistic at first.

I didn't start with connections. I didn't start with a roadmap. Like many developers, I started with curiosity, a laptop, and the willingness to keep going even when progress felt slow.

Every long journey begins as an idea that refuses to leave.

Tokyo is not today's goal.

It is not even next year's goal.

It is the horizon.

For now, my focus remains simple: becoming a better engineer.

Tokyo may be years away.

The next LeetCode problem is tomorrow morning.
